Emerald Gunpowder Pearls

from $4.00

Cuppa Culture’s Emerald Gunpowder Pearls is much finer than its classic predecessor with less caffeine making it enjoyable for any time of day. The taste and aroma are also softer and less bitter than what you would expect from the standard quality Gunpowder tea. The flavor profile is bold, slightly smoky, sometimes peppery and a little vegetal. These tea leaves will stay fresher longer than other green tea leaves due to the compressed form which also makes this a perfect choice for many steepings of the same leaves!

Origin: Emerald Gunpowder Pearls is a form of Chinese tea in which each leaf has been rolled into a small round pellet. Its English name comes from the tea’s resemblance to grains of gunpowder. Gunpowder tea production in China dates back to the Tang Dynasty 618–907.

The tea leaves are withered, steamed, rolled, and then dried. The constant rotation during the process gives the tea its spherical form. Rolling also renders the leaves less susceptible to physical damage and breakage allowing them to retain more of their flavor and aroma. Shiny pellets indicate that the tea is relatively fresh, and the pellet size is associated with its quality, High quality gunpowder tea will have small, tightly rolled pellets.

1 level teaspoon (or 2.5 grams) per 8oz cup of less than boiled water, preferably 175F or less, so as not to burn & damage these delicate leaves. Also, these leaves will unfurl while steeping, and reveal themselves to be much larger than you will initially expect.

*Brewing Tip: As with all green tea, before pouring the heated water over the leaves, test the temperature on your lips or tongue. If the water scorches your delicate skin, then it will do the same to the delicate tea leaves.

*Additional Brewing Tip: Traditionally when preparing Chinese teas, an initial rinsing of the leaves will help to awaken the tea, especially teas that are tightly rolled like a Pearl. Measure out your desired amount of tea. Pour less-than boiled water over the leaves till covered. Swirl the leaves gently in the water for approximately 10 seconds. You’ll see that the leaves have started to “relax”. Discard this water. Now begin brewing your cup of tea. Pour fresh, hot water over the enlivened leaves, and steep for 1-2 minutes. When you steep a cup of Gunpowder Pearl tea, each individual leaf will unfold. Once brewed, if you find the flavor to be too strong or tangy, try pouring away the first brew and taste the second. A lot of the caffeine content will also be eliminated in this way. This tea is an excellent choice for multiple steepings.

Sample size provides at least 4 servings. 1.5oz pkg provides at least 17 brewed cups. Adjust the amount of tea according to your personal taste. Use more tea for a stronger brew. Use less tea for a milder flavor.
